Calling

Have you experienced feelings of inadequacies lately? Has anyone felt under resourced and over burdened? Have you lacked the mental, physical or spiritual energy to fulfill your responsibilities with excellence? Have you felt fatigued? Have you felt a depletion in your passion for ministry? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then let me congratulate you on being normal and welcome you to spiritual leadership. You know, it is kind of like being a parent. You look forward to … [Read more...]

Hidden in Plain Sight

I went on a hike the other day. It was a familiar trial that I have hiked before. From time to time you can see deer in certain spots along the trail. I stopped at one of those spots and looked around, but I did not see any deer. I decided to sit down in this little area off the trail and just be still. All of a sudden, I could see several deer through the trees. They were motionless just as I was now. Then it hit me. The deer had been there the entire time, but the combination of their … [Read more...]

Act Like You Own the Place

I noticed something while eating in a fast food restaurant recently that I feel is worth sharing. I happened to look around and noticed an unusual amount of debris on the floor…a few napkins, straw and small bag. The trash was obvious so I expected the next employee who walked by would remove the trash from the floor. Much to my surprise, an employee walked by and without flinching or hesitating she stepped over the trash and went on her way. That got my attention. Then another employee walked … [Read more...]

25 Lessons in 25 Years – Lesson 7: “It Is All Too Easy to Forget”

We recently returned from a PEACE trip (that’s Saddleback’s Missions Initiative) in Manila. We took a team of parents, staff and 6th graders. We were given total access to a public elementary school, which is something that is quite uncommon in that part of the Philippines. We focused our ministry efforts on 5th and 6th grade students by offering a VBS style event two times each day on their campus. It was one of the most impactful mission trips I have ever been a part of. I cannot wait to go … [Read more...]

NO, I WILL NOT GROW UP

Throughout my life I have been told these words off and on...”Steve, you need to grow up and act like an adult.” I get it, I am an adult. I have a wonderful wife, two great sons, a large ministry with many responsibilities and they are all counting on me. Yes, I get it. There comes a time, as the apostle Paul said, to “put away childish things.” BUT, that does not mean I have to “grow up.” Recently, I feel like there has been a traffic jam in my head. Too many things going on at once, too … [Read more...]

Give It To Me Now

We have grown so accustom to “speed” that when things are delayed, we become impatient and aggravated. Okay, maybe it is just a personal problem and I am projecting my difficulty on you guys, haha. Here is an example, the other day I am working on a project in my office. I sent a multiple page document to the printer which is about 24 steps from my desk. As soon as I hit the command “print,” I jumped up and walked to the printer. Now I admit, I probably walk faster than most. But on this day, … [Read more...]

Where Are You Going?

What is the one common denominator in all our lives regardless of where you live, the size and scope of your ministry or your family situation? We are all BUSY! Almost everyone I know is “busy.” Even if they really aren’t busy, they feel compelled to say they are busy because everyone else is. We all agree life is just a little more complicated than it used to be and it does not seem to be letting up. But no matter what demands or expectations are placed on my shoulders, the stewardship of … [Read more...]

I Never Thought It Could Happen To Me

Have you ever heard someone say these words? It’s typically followed by a tragic story of personal loss or failure. Most of the time when someone confesses to having an affair, being addicted to pornography, dealing with dark depression, wanting to quit their job and simply run away, the story begins with those words…“I didn’t think it could happen to me.” In the last several weeks, I have been a part of conversations with people who unfortunately uttered those words as they confessed a secret … [Read more...]

Disconnect or Die

Okay, maybe that’s a little strong. Let me start over. Hello, my name is Steve Adams and I’m addicted to connection. I didn’t think I was, but apparently I am addicted to connection. Now in all fairness, I’m not as bad as some people I know. I know people who literally can’t be separated from a mobile device…phone, iPad, etc. While I have NO trouble ignoring email, I did notice something about myself this week. You see, I took some vacation time with the intention of simply “doing nothing.” … [Read more...]
