If you were one of the millions of people watching television on the evening of February 22 (last night), you were probably watching the Oscars, otherwise known as the Academy Awards. This is the annual American awards ceremony that honors cinematic achievements in the film industry and parades a “who’s who” list of presenters across the stage to present a small statuette named “Oscar” to those deemed worthy of the prestigious award. I am not an actor, but when I think back to some of my … [Read more...]

I went on a hike the other day. It was a familiar trial that I have hiked before. From time to time you can see deer in certain spots along the trail. I stopped at one of those spots and looked around, but I did not see any deer. I decided to sit down in this little area off the trail and just be still. All of a sudden, I could see several deer through the trees. They were motionless just as I was now. Then it hit me. The deer had been there the entire time, but the combination of their … [Read more...]
Here is a quick video from Saddleback's new Worship CD - Brave. It's a collection of 10 songs written and produced for kids to sing and parents to enjoy too! I am standing in front of the Children’s Ministry Center at Saddleback after one of the Easter services. There were some kids running around the outdoor baptismal pool just about 20 feet away. This is a common scene at Saddleback. We have a waterfall and a small stream close to the baptismal pool and, as you can imagine, kids love to play in and around the water features. Well, I turned my back to talk to someone and I heard a loud splash. That can only mean one thing…one of those kids fell … [Read more...]
Was Jesus too lazy to finish the job? Here’s the story: A good friend of Jesus named Lazarus died. By the time Jesus gets to Lazarus, he was already in a tomb. Jesus called Lazarus out of death and out of the tomb. What happens next carries a significant lesson for you and me. And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!” John 11:44 (NLT) It is interesting to me in this passage that … [Read more...]
When you hear the phrase “let it go,” you almost instantly think of the hit song from Disney’s animated film “Frozen.” But while reading in the book of John this week, the phrase “let it go” served as a great reminder. We will pick up the story as Lazarus, a good friend of Jesus, died. Mary and Martha, Lazarus’ sisters, found Jesus to let Him know what was going on. From the tone of the story, it seems as though Mary and Martha expected Jesus to come with them so Jesus could heal their brother. … [Read more...]
I noticed something while eating in a fast food restaurant recently that I feel is worth sharing. I happened to look around and noticed an unusual amount of debris on the floor…a few napkins, straw and small bag. The trash was obvious so I expected the next employee who walked by would remove the trash from the floor. Much to my surprise, an employee walked by and without flinching or hesitating she stepped over the trash and went on her way. That got my attention. Then another employee walked … [Read more...]
Recently I saw the movie “Gravity” starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. I am a NASA freak so I will see anything connected to NASA or space. However, I was skeptical of “Gravity” after seeing the previews. My initial feeling was to skip this one because in the preview Sandra Bullock's character cried while in the middle of a mission in space. We all know astronauts don’t cry! Well, my wife and son Matt wanted to see the movie so we went. While I recognize I am not a movie critic, I … [Read more...]
