Disconnect or Die

Okay, maybe that’s a little strong. Let me start over. Hello, my name is Steve Adams and I’m addicted to connection.

I didn’t think I was, but apparently I am addicted to connection. Now in all fairness, I’m not as bad as some people I know. I know people who literally can’t be separated from a mobile device…phone, iPad, etc. While I have NO trouble ignoring email, I did notice something about myself this week. You see, I took some vacation time with the intention of simply “doing nothing.” My goal…do nothing productive! I know it sounds strange, but it makes sense when you think about it. Like you, I spend the majority of my time trying to “produce” something. Well, this week it all came to a halt. I am doing nothing in order to accomplish two goals:

  1. Recharge my batteries.
  2. Disrupt my pattern of hurried activity.

I took the time off and I was determined to simply “do nothing.” However, one important element was necessary…disconnection.

I turned off my email (oh yes I did), I put my phone down (can you do that?) and refused to work on projects from work (sinner). What I discovered was this. There was a constant temptation to check my phone and email to see if the world needed me to ride in on a white horse and save it. Okay, I’m being extremely sarcastic. But initially, I had to force myself to remain disconnected. After a few days of being disconnected, guess what I discovered.

The world is doing just fine without me.
Saddleback Church is still moving forward.

And I needed this more than I realized. Here’s the bottom line. When you take time off (and I strongly encourage you to do so), DISCONNECT. Even if for just a little while turn everything off and relax. As valuable as you are, I bet your world can survive for a little while without you as well. Give it a try, and if you are not fully satisfied, I will refund your money. And just in case you didn’t know, THAT’S A JOKE!

Don’t let the addiction of connection prevent you from experiencing a much needed time of rest, relaxation and recharging. Join me on the other side and disconnect!
