Great Minds Don’t Think Alike

I have come across some sayings that don’t make much sense when you really think about it. Here’s one: “No one goes there anymore…it’s too crowded.” Ok, then how is it crowded if no one goes there? Here’s another one: “Be still my beating heart.” Umm, I’m not a medical professional, but I think that’s a bad thing. Check this one out: “Great minds think alike.” We have all heard this saying and I’m not going to spend a great deal of time dissecting the phrase. We get it. But it does raise the question…do all great minds really think alike?

George S. Patton is often credited with this quote, “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” When I read that quote, here is the core thought that stands out to me. If you are thinking just like everyone else, then you are not actually using your unique thinking capabilities. I wonder how many great ideas are left on the shelf of our minds because we simply don’t engage in the process of thinking?

Here are some common enemies of great thinking:

  • Busyness
  • Excuses
  • Fear
  • Lack of Confidence

Yes that list could be longer, but these seem to be some of the most common barriers to good thinking. Do any of these exist in your life? I think General Patton is right, “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” Don’t be that someone who “isn’t thinking.” Find time to think and then don’t be afraid to try your new ideas. There are great ideas locked up inside your mind just waiting to be released. Do it today!
